EU ban on conventional cages won't be delayed

(8/25/2011)

French Agriculture Minister Michel Barnier, who heads the European Union Agricultural Council, said this week there will be no delay in the implementation of the EU ban on conventional cage housing for layers, which becomes effective Jan. 1, 2012.

He was supported by other agriculture ministers, including those from the U.K., Germany, Spain and Netherlands.

The ban, adopted in 1999, requires EU egg producers to transition to enriched colony cages by Jan. 1, although many producers in several member nations have not done so and have sought a delay in the ban's enforcement. However, ministers said that would be inherently unfair to producers who have made the transition and need higher prices to pay higher costs of production.
